Our Level 3 TEFL Certificate Course will introduce you to TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language). It is an online-only course and leads to a 120hr TEFL Certificate. It is the best option if you want to find casual work teaching English, such as volunteer teaching or teaching while backpacking, plus some online roles.
Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma Course goes into more detail. It can be studied online or online with classroom learning (combined) and leads to a 168hr TEFL Diploma. Our classroom learning is delivered face-to-face at one of our New Zealand campuses. A Level 5 TEFL Course is the best option if you want to find formal work teaching English, such as the contracted roles from our TEFL Jobs Board, or government teaching programmes, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursement and help to get your work visa.

The beauty of online TEFL courses is that you can do them online! So it doesn’t matter where in the world you are. In New Zealand, we offer a face-to-face component to complement our Level 5 168-hour TEFL course in Auckland. This practical component is a 10-hour in-class session which allows you to put the theory into practice and get feedback from an experienced TEFL teacher.
With a TEFL qualification from a reputable, internationally recognised and accredited TEFL course provider, you can teach:

A TEFL qualification opens up a range of opportunities for you. With a TEFL certificate, you can teach General English, Business English, English for Academic Purposes, English for Exams, and a variety of different English for Specific Purposes classes. You can also write teaching and learning materials, become a TEFL or travel blogger, become a TEFL trainer, or manage or own your own school.
A TEFL course from The TEFL Academy costs between $650 and $1250, depending on the course you choose. If you ask us, that’s a small price to pay to invest in your future.
TEFL teachers who only want to teach privately, online or in a volunteer position can take a Level 3 TEFL Course. But TEFL teachers who want to qualify for long-term, better-paid teaching jobs should do a Combined Level 5 Course , or an online-only Level 5 TEFL. While both courses allow you to teach, a Level 5 provides you with a better understanding of the intricacies of teaching English as a Foreign Language, so preparing you more for the classroom. A Level 5 TEFL qualification is preferred by many EFL employers for this reason.
In terms of length, your TEFL course should be at least 120 hours long. This is the standard length for TEFL courses and is the minimum accepted by TEFL employees. It might seem like 120 hours is a bit short to fully equip you with the skills needed to teach English as a foreign language, but don’t be fooled: a TEFL course is comprehensive to say the least.
As career TEFLers, we have to say yes! A TEFL qualification is a sure way to change your life. You might start out teaching English as a foreign language for a gap year, or a volunteering position, but you might find you want to be involved in TEFL in the long run. We recommend doing a Combined Level 5 TEFL, or an online-only Level 5 TEFL course so that you open yourself up to all the benefits of TEFL from the beginning of your adventure.
