All main courses (Level 3 & 5) are Ofqual regulated
Most providers hold Ofqual regulation for their Level 5 course, but their Level 3, often their most popular, is not government-regulated. This means if you choose a competitor's Level 3 course, your qualification may not be Ofqual regulated. With The TEFL Academy, whichever level you choose, you receive an Ofqual regulated qualification.

Fast-track tutor support
Competitors offer support from the same dedicated tutor who is assigned to you for the duration of the course. This means you're entirely dependent on one person's availability, if they're busy, on leave, or simply slow to respond. We offer a "pool of tutors" which means you receive a response within a few hours, including weekends and public holidays. The result is faster feedback on assignments, quicker answers to your questions, and nothing to slow down your course completion.

The TEFL Academy is one of the most popular TEFL course providers in South Africa. We are consistently rated highly among our graduates in terms of quality, service and value for money. We have an understanding of the needs and challenges of our South African students, and we offer you assistance in whatever way we can. A TEFL qualification from The TEFL Academy is recognised not only in South Africa and online, but everywhere in the world.
As with any course of study, the quality of your qualification can vary. The TEFL Academy is internationally recognised and accredited, making it one of the most popular TEFL courses in the world. The TEFL Academy is an award-winning TEFL course provider. At a minimum, a TEFL course should be 120 hours long. In addition, the content of the course should cover the foundations of teaching English, English grammar, teaching the skills and systems of English, classroom management and discipline, and assessment. If you are wondering, should I do a Level 3 or a Level 5 TEFL course? Then the answer is it depends on your needs. TEFL teachers who only want to teach privately, online or in a volunteer position can take a Level 3 TEFL course. But TEFL teachers who want to qualify for long-term, better-paid teaching jobs should do a Combined Level 5 TEFL or an online-only Level 5 course. While both courses allow you to teach, a Level 5 provides you with a better understanding of the intricacies of teaching English as a Foreign Language, so preparing you more for the classroom. A Level 5 TEFL qualification is preferred by many EFL employers for this reason.
Yebo yes! At The TEFL Academy, online courses is what we do! The TEFL Academy offers a Level 3 120-hour online TEFL course and a Level 5 168-hour online TEFL course. Our Level 5 168-hour Combined TEFL course includes a 10-hour in-class practical session along with the online course. Other online courses we offer:
- A Level 5 40-hour Observed Teaching Practice Course
- A 30-hour Teaching Business English course
- A 30-hour Teaching Online and 1:1 course
- A 30-hour Teaching Young Learners course
The TEFL Academy runs face-to-face TEFL courses in 96 locations around the world. In South Africa, these courses are run in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria. These are 10-hour face-to-face components which are completed in conjunction with the online course to qualify for a Level 5 168-hour Combined TEFL course.
A quality TEFL certification lets you teach in the majority of countries around the world - in fact, wherever there is a demand for English teachers you can teach with a TEFL certification. From Bangkok to Berlin to Buenos Aires, there are loads of jobs available for TEFL teachers. And, of course, you can always teach online.
This may be surprising, but South Africa is a popular destination for English language learners. South Africa hosts many international students who come here for a holiday or a gap year to learn English - especially Brazilians, Angolans, Saudi Arabians, South Koreans, French, Swiss and Italian. Language centres in South Africa are usually found in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Gqeberha. A number of South African universities have language centres for foreign students. Don’t forget, you can always teach online - you just need to get a bit of back-up (thanks Eskom).
Many people think you can only teach with a TEFL certificate, but that’s only the start. Once you have some experience under your belt, there are a range of other options available to you. Having a TEFL certificate means you can also become an EFL author, be a TEFL or travel blogger, become a teacher trainer, or own and manage a language school. Alternatively, you can teach online and work as a digital nomad - living wherever you want.
A TEFL course from The TEFL Academy costs from R4 500 to R12 500. While this might sound like a lot of rands, a TEFL course is an investment in your future. It might seem like a short course but it is further education which gives you access to a whole new field of jobs.
A Level 3 TEFL course may be more attractive because it’s cheaper and less of a time commitment, however, we only recommend a Level 3 course if you are sure your TEFL adventure is going to be a short-term stint or a more informal situation, like volunteering. The thing with TEFL is you never know where you may end up. You might start teaching online from your mom’s couch in Kimberley, but next year you could teaching kindergarten in Japan. A Combined Level 5 TEFL or an online-only Level 5 TEFL is a more widely accepted qualification. It is recommended for TEFL teachers who are looking into long-term,more formal TEFL contracts. If you are not sure where your TEFL adventures may take you, a Level 5 is the right option for you. In this sense, a Level 5 TEFL course is worth the higher price tag.
A TEFL qualification is definitely worth it. A TEFL qualification is a great investment in your future. It gives you the opportunity to travel, earn money and learn new skills. A TEFL qualification prepares you to teach in the classroom, but it can also introduce you to travelling, blogging, writing, managing - and a whole bunch of other jobs you might never have considered possible. Even better, a TEFL qualification doesn’t expire - it’s for life!
In South Africa, you can work as a TEFL teacher at one of the language schools around the country. These schools are mostly in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth. You are paid per hour and the hourly rate ranges from R100 to R150 an hour. This is why many South African TEFL teachers live and work abroad in countries with a low cost of living. Even with a relatively low salary they can earn enough to save and live their best lives. Alternatively you can work online and earn in dollars while living in South Africa.
