Combined TEFL Courses in San Francisco

At The TEFL Academy in San Francisco, we offer a Combined Level 5 TEFL Course (168 hours). The classroom portion of the course is taught in a face-to-face setting over one day at The Cartwright Hotel, San Francisco. The online portion of the course can be started before or after your classroom training. Our dedicated group of TEFL experts will be available to help you throughout your studies.

During the class in San Francisco, you’ll get the chance to talk to our experienced trainer and meet other students on the TEFL course. You’ll learn about the practicalities of teaching, including classroom management and become classroom-confident with 6 hours of peer-to-peer teaching practice. A separate 10-hour Teaching Practice Certificate will be awarded on completion.

How quickly you wish to complete the 158 hours of online TEFL course study is at your discretion. We allow up to six months, but some students complete the course in 4 weeks. You will learn the theory of TEFL, as well as grammar and vocabulary teaching skills.

You will be granted an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168 hours) upon completing the TEFL course. Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status. The DEAC is a US Department of Education National Accreditor. Our course is regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi, a UK government-recognized awarding body. The online course consists of ten mandatory units. All ten units are exam-assessed and for Units 5, 7 and 10 there are also coursework-assessed assignments. You get 6-months’ access to the course, but some students complete their qualification within 4 – 6 weeks (when studied full-time).

With so much choice and such a vast amount of conflicting information available on the internet, it can be difficult for potential TEFL course students to make the correct choice. The Level 5 version of our TEFL course is a more in-depth overview of TEFL and is a good choice if you wish to gain formal teaching jobs, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursements and help in gaining a work visa. Upon completion, you will be awarded an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168 hours), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government) and DEAC-approved (US Department of Education National Accreditor).

A regulated Level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government) has approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

We also offer a Level 3 version of our course, which is an introduction to TEFL and is perfect for anyone looking for casual work teaching English, such as volunteering, backpacking or finding work “in-country”, and some online teaching roles. It requires less of a time commitment (120hrs) and is more cost-effective, so it can be a way of fast-tracking into the industry for someone with a short-term teaching plan. The course you should choose depends entirely on your own situation, needs and teaching plans.

All regulated Level 5 TEFL Diplomas are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

Brendon earned an MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Central Connecticut State University, and has been teaching English as a Second Language for 8 years in China, South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

His students have included adult business people, high school and college students, kindergarten and elementary school children, and immigrants living in Boston.  In addition to teaching abroad, Brendon volunteered on organic rice farms in Japan, joined a dance group with security guards in Southern China, and learned to make kimchi in Korea.

Recently, Brendon was the lead teacher at a non-profit organization assisting immigrants with finding employment and college opportunities in the Boston area, and he currently teaches at a private international high school just outside Boston.

Brendon is passionate about teaching students how to learn on their own, and enjoys helping new teachers find their own strengths and teaching style.  He speaks Mandarin Chinese and Japanese, and enjoys learning about how students’ native languages influence their ideas and personality.

His one piece of advice for future EFL teachers is that when you teach a language, you’re not just teaching others knowledge; you’re guiding them in the development of a skill.  Brendon would like to encourage everyone to try teaching EFL abroad, as you can learn so much at the same time!
